Octagon Theatre redevelopment consultation

Closes 30 Sep 2021

Opened 27 Aug 2021

Overview

Following on from earlier this year, when Councillors of South Somerset District Council voted unanimously in favour of the redevelopment of The Octagon Theatre, we are delighted to open up some formal consultation with the public and our patrons on the ideas and concepts of the transformational work to be done at the venue which will see the theatre become a flagship venue for arts and entertainment in Somerset. The Octagon Theatre currently averages 83% capacity throughout the year and is often sold out for popular shows.

A total of £23 million will be invested into the project, with £10 million of funding from the Arts Council which was unveiled in the Government’s Budget in March. The remaining £13 million will be funded through South Somerset District Council and other potential funders.

Why your views matter

We have recently appointed architects to take the development through to the next stages of planning.

Proposed improvements to the building will include:

  • Increased seating capacity
  • Improved staging facilities that will bring a range of new shows
  • A more accessible building for all our guests with accessible toilets on every level, an adult changing facility and inclusivity embedded throughout our venue
  • A greener and more sustainable venue that will strive to be carbon neutral
  • Two additional spaces; a 126 seat film theatre and 64 seat boutique cinema
  • New rehearsal spaces with a community studio and dance studio
  • Welcoming and spacious front of house areas with a café open throughout the day and a separate restaurant.

To help inform their work, we want to hear from the public and patrons on the initial concepts and enable you to voice your opinions on our proposals.
